Growing Histories: A Living Map of Spain – A Botanical Artwork Inspired by Ancestral Medicine

speakinplants

We’re excited to share one of our most meaningful projects this year: the creation of a map of Spain made with plants traditionally used in reproductive medicine. In collaboration with @planteka.co and artists @maureenfconnor and @kadambaribaxi, we brought this artwork to life. It not only explores the relationship between each plant and its region of origin but also captures the country’s relief and geography.

Selection and Research Process

Starting with an initial list of medicinal species, we conducted research to determine which plants naturally thrive in each region of Spain. Our goal was to ensure that each plant accurately reflected its ecosystem and the botanical history of its area. Moreover, the map was designed to replicate the country’s natural relief: in mountainous areas, we selected taller plants, while in the plateaus, we used lower-growing species. This created a visual and geographical representation that mirrors Spain’s topography.

Cultural and Natural Connection

Each selected species represents not only a medicinal plant but also a piece of the region’s ancestral identity and culture. This project sought to connect the past with the present, using plants not only as an aesthetic resource but also as a cultural bridge.

Through this work, we wanted to show that design can go beyond the visual, achieving a conscious integration of nature, history, and art.

Our gratitude goes to the artists for inviting us to help bring this special idea to life.
